It is very interest topic and my pleasure to participate in this discussion. In fact, it is an argumentative issue because this issue directly affect a huge number of people. Many students argue about this issue and everyone has her/his reasons. Generally, fast speak may result in inability to understand the speaker, not only for international student but also for natives. The speed in speech does not mean that fast-talking parson is a good speaker. Take for exampleJulia Eileen Gillard, she speaks to the public in verybalanced speech. Her speech is very clear to all of us and we can understand her very clearly. She is the power and she is the representative of the Australian people. Why she does not speak fast? Speaking smoothly and clearly is an important skill, which so many people lack of this skill. This is in general. What about this situation in the class? Even in the university, teachers, lecturers and professors should speak slowly. Students (even natives) come to the class to learn and to understand from their teacher, not to challenge with the speech speed of their lecturers. If the teacher quickly speak, then students may not get the benefits of the class. How about us as an international students who learning English? Actually, as non-native English speakers we come to an academic classes and sessions to learn English. We want to learn the actual English not the street language. There is a huge different between academic English and English in general, and this can be clearly seen in IELTS. IELTS has two versions of its exam. It has an academic and general exam and people choose what type of exam do they want. Moreover, you might find some people who are native English speaker and cannot write in academic way. Some of them cannot do academic study and research. That is way we are in an academic facility (REW). We want to learn a strong and essential English. People who want to learn general English can achieve that on Swanston Street or Elisabeth Street. I can insure that after few months, they will be able to speak quickly and recognize the fast talk. Finally, as I said before, to make the largest possible number of people understand you is a skill deserves to be cherished.
